February is I Love Math Month
Download the DreamBox Math Activity Calendar for February
Even though February is the shortest month of the year, that doesn’t mean it isn’t jam packed with activities that remind us that math is all around.
February brings a lot to celebrate including the birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive a medical degree in the US in 1849. The British-born physician was the first woman to graduate from medical school, and a pioneer in promoting the education of women in medicine. During a time when medical schools were not accepting women, Blackwell was able to get accepted into Geneva College in New York (although her acceptance was initially intended as a practical joke). This month we celebrate Elizabeth and all women physicians to recognize their efforts in their schooling and work.
And for a little bit of fun, celebrate National Tortilla Chip day! Commonly enjoyed with salsa, it is a wonderful day to grab some ingredients and teach kids about ratios and measurements! Spend some time cooking together and help kids develop an understanding of the basic math that takes place in the kitchen.
If you’re a teacher, download our Math Activity Calendar now and send it home with your students to help cultivate a math mindset outside of school. If you’re a parent, print the calendar and hang it in your kitchen as a reminder to incorporate fun family math activities into your daily routine. Enjoy!
