Math learning games can help address the ‘math gap’
Early math learning is the best predictor of future success in school. That’s according to a landmark study of 35,000 preschoolers in Canada, England and the United States. (1) The surprise in this report? That math learning early on is the best predictor of reading achievement, as well. So in addition to reading to your child, be sure you’re helping them learn and enjoy math early on, too.
It makes sense because math:- Builds critical thinking skills
- Develops problem solving abilities
- Teaches application of prior knowledge (multiplication builds on addition, for example)
Math beyond the classroom
As a parent, you can emphasize the importance of math in everyday activities. Make it a concrete tool, not just of an abstract set of numbers on a page:
- It’s counting silverware
- Making change
- Sorting groups of objects
- Finding patterns
