The patent-pending technologies that make DreamBox Learning unique
The web can deliver richer, more dynamic and effective experiences than traditional
downloadable or CD-ROM software. The DreamBox platform is exceptional because it brings
the full force of the web to each child in a highly personalized, intelligent, and
interactive way. And the educational experience is far richer and more effective than
the simple web pages most education companies use (i.e., they use the web as a static
delivery vehicle with little-to-no clickstream analysis or data-informed responses).
At its core, the DreamBox platform was designed to enable the best methods and
lessons of classroom teachers to reach every child in a way that fits their particular
needs and interests. This “just right for me” learning experience is based on
(1) effective data-informed instruction with continuous and dynamic adaptations, and
(2) an engaging learning environment with game-like elements and motivational features.
Much of this experience is based on the following patent-pending technologies; they
also serve as our technology differentiators:
-
GuideRight™. An heuristics engine for continuous
assessments and adaptations, this technology provides for individualized
placement so that each student starts the lessons in the right place. More
importantly, it allows for continuous assessment and adaptations during
lesson game play, so that audio and visual hints, pace, lesson sequence,
lesson tools, instructional feedback, and more, are all personalized to
that particular child.
-
LessonScript™. LessonScript is an authoring
environment for scalable lesson development. Instead of having to rely
on the traditional sequential software development model, our engineers
have created a lesson authoring environment full of interactive and
teacher-designed virtual tools so that our academic team (most of whom
are Nationally Board Certified Teachers) can build and refine lessons
in real time. This also means that LessonScript can support 3rd party
content development.
-
Dynamic and “skinnable” lesson architecture. DreamBox
developed a flexible overlay for substituting creative assets (graphics
and audio) and language so DreamBox-enabled content can be presented
with different themes (e.g. pirates or neighborhood pets) to appeal to
different students. It also allows easy localized to new languages.
-
Parent and Teacher dashboard. Our online dashboards
provide detailed and insightful feedback and progress reports. DreamBox
tells parents and teachers exactly what progress students are making
in the curriculum, and provides additional resources including e-newsletters,
useful hints, tips to parents suggesting how they can transfer DreamBox
Learning lessons to the real world, and the like.
-
Platform infrastructure. Like any good large scale
web service, we’ve built our platform to be extensible and scalable
across multiple subjects and languages. And DreamBox can support a wide
variety of curricula (e.g., K-12 math, literacy, science, chemistry,
etc.) and heavy traffic, world-wide usage, and multivariate data analysis.
DreamBox will continue to drive platform innovation by building more
applications, licensing the platform for 3rd party development, and
extending its reach to other connected platforms and devices (e.g., mobile,
eBooks, and gaming consoles).
