August 2019 Activity Calendar
Your August Activity Calendar is here! Although it may not be time for back to school yet, it’s certainly not too early to start preparing! Have you gotten your supplies for the upcoming year? Brushed up on your DreamBox over the summer? There are so many things to do before the first day! Aside from back to school, this month is filled with National Watermelon, Tooth Fairy and Dog Day! That’s a lot to celebrate right there – but that’s not all!
Did you know that this month is home to National Purple Heart Day! This day is here to honor the men and women who have fought for our country and have been wounded or killed in their line of action. This award was created by General George Washington in 1782 and began as a heart-shaped piece of silk bound with a thin edge of silver. Today however, the medal bears a bust of George Washington and his coat of arms.
August is also home to World Honeybee Day! Did you know that one bee must fly about 90,000 miles (three times around the world) to make one pound of honey!? That’s A LOT of flying! These little guys are able to visit 50 to 100 flowers during one collection trip and even more remarkable, communicate with each other by dancing! How cool! Honeybees are a vital part of plant growth because they transfer pollen between the male and female parts of a plant which allow plants to grow seeds and fruit – without them, our planet would be much less colorful!
So, this August, get outside and thank those who have served, observe a Honey bee or two and enjoy a creamsicle on the 14th for National Creamsicle Day! For more ideas on how to encourage students to make those daily math connections, download our August Math Activity Calendar now. If you’re a teacher, you can print it and send it home with your students to help cultivate a math mindset outside of school. If you’re a parent, you can hang it in your kitchen as a reminder to incorporate fun family math activities into every day. Enjoy!
