October 2019 Activity Calendar
Candy, goblin’s and ghosts – oh my!
Happy October DreamBoxers! It is officially fall and that means its time for crunchy leaves, pumpkin spice, shorter days and longer nights! It’s the time of year when spooky creatures come about and the temperatures slowly start to drop. This month is packed with festive days to celebrate with your students! So get ready and download this months activity calendar because you’re going to be busy!
Kicking off the month on the third is National Walk to School Day! With that perfect fall weather, take some extra time in the morning and encourage your students’ families to walk them to school. Not only is this a great way to bond, but it also will get everyone a little physical activity which we all know is so important! On the ninth, we have National Stop Bullying Day. Each and every day students are bullied which is an unfair and awful way for a child to grow up. On this day use the hashtag #NationalStopBullyingDay to spread awareness to others and educate your own community on how we can provide a safe and welcoming space for all students.
Getting into the middle of the month we have National Chess Day! Did you know that this popular two-player game is over 15 centuries old? It is said to have originated in India and then from there spread across the globe slowly, but surely! Moving on we have Columbus Day on the 14th! This day honors Mr. Christopher Columbus and is said to mark his arrival to the Americas in 1492 – that’s over 500 years ago! After this, we hope your hungry because we come upon National Pasta Day! We know there are so many ways to make this simple food, so get creative with your students and share a recipe!
As we move towards the end of the month, we have National Youth Confidence Day. Use this day to share with your students how special they are and make sure they are encouraging their peers to do the same. October is National Bullying Prevention Month, so it’s a must that we keep making headway all month long! On the 26th we have National Pumpkin Day! Have your students estimate how many seeds are in a pumpkin! Did you know that there are over 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkins sold each year? That would be quite the pumpkin patch! Then of course, as we end the month, we have Halloween. So, get spooky or sweet and enjoy this day of candy, ghosts, and goblins!
As always, for more ways to be mindful of math during the month of October, download your DreamBox Activity Calendar now and use it to encourage the kids in your life to keep making those daily connections between numbers and the world around them. Happy October! Enjoy!
