## Celebrate a mathematician’s favorite day today!

Who doesn’t love an excuse to have a slice of pie? But for us at DreamBox, Pi day (spelled P-I) is our favorite holiday. But did you know, Pi day has only been celebrated for 30 years! In 1988 physicist Larry Shaw celebrated the first “Pi Day” at the San Francisco Exploratorium science museum. Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th, or 3/14, which stands to represent the first three digits of pi – 3.14. (Fun Fact: It is also the birthday of Albert Einstein!)

What is Pi?

Pi represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. It is key to calculating the area of a circle (A = πr2 ) or the volume of a cylinder, (V = πr2h). It is most commonly used in geometry, and is known for its trillions of calculated digits beyond the decimal points.

How to celebrate Pi day?

So what is the big deal? Yes, many people say Pi day is just an excuse to eat pie because of the coincidence of the name and also the shape, but we see it as a perfect day to celebrate Math!

1. Pi Day crafts – These low prep Pi Day activities from the momgineer blog (Source: Momgineer) include fun ways to make bracelets to represent the digits, printable crowns, and circle art ideas.
2. Bake a Pie – Involve children in helping bake a pie. Cooking with children at home is always a valuable tool to teach them about measurement, time, and ratios. As an added Pi Day bonus, teach them how to measure the circumference of the pie!
3. Pi Day String Art – (Source: Pink Stripey Socks) Using a cheap paper plate and some colored string and paint, you can make Pi Day String Art to teach children about the relationship between circumference and diameter.
4. Grab a book! – Who doesn’t love a good book? There are great Pi books for kids, so grab one of these books (Source: Literary Hoots) from the library and read along with your kids.

However you end up celebrating Pi Day, it is a great day to remember the importance of Math and how it is all around us. For other fun math activities and holidays, be sure to download our March activity calendar so you can celebrate a little bit of math everyday.
