<h2>Teaching your little ones to respect the tech</h2>&nbsp;Chances are, teaching your child to use a laptop responsibly and independently is something your parents probably didn’t have to do. And, if they did, you probably weren’t a toddler at the time. Things have changed. According to Common Sense Media, half (53 percent) of all 2- to 4-year-olds have used a computer. If you’re a parent or guardian thinking about introducing your child to tech, here are a few tips to help you get started:<ol><li>Set firm ground rules. Depending on the age of your child, you may need to explain that the laptop is not a toy. From there, you should establish basic rules about when and how your child will have access to the device. For example, you might consider designating a specific area of your home as a dedicated work space (e.g., the desk in the family room, or the table in the kitchen). Decide too, if you’d like there to be an adult in the room or nearby whenever your child uses the laptop. Also, you may want to set guidelines about how long your child can use the computer, and what they can and cannot do online.</li><li>Explain proper laptop care. This one’s tricky. We’ve all eaten at our desks or checked email with a coffee in hand, but it’s a good idea to tell your children to keep food and drink away from the laptop at all times. Also, explain that the mouse, keyboard, and other accessories are sensitive devices and should be handled gently. Explain how dropping the laptop or spilling food and drinks on the keyboard can permanently damage the computer.</li><li>Practice using the trackpad or mouse. Using a trackpad typically requires fine motor skills and coordination. If your child is younger, you may want to purchase a mouse device. If you do, be sure to choose one that fits comfortably in your child’s hand. If they’re physically unable to hold or handle a mouse, they’ll have difficulty navigating through menus and performing basic tasks. Whether you choose to use a trackpad or a mouse, remember that you can always adjust the speed and sensitivity of the device from your laptop control panel.</li><li>Choose age-appropriate applications. Young children who are still developing their fine motor skills may not be able to use applications that require them to click on very small items. Likewise, they may have trouble scrolling. If you look at the DreamBox interface, you’ll see that the learning environment features large, colorful graphics that are easy to click.</li><li>Bookmark frequently visited URLs: Bookmarks are a great way to save and organize specific websites and applications so your child can easily revisit them again and again. Sit with your child and bookmark the URLs you think they’ll use most frequently. When you’re done, be sure to show them where to find the bookmarks and which links to click on. It’s easy for kids to identify applications by their icons, so point out where they appear in the URL.</li><li>Teach them how to launch applications, and log in. For very young students you may have to get them set up, but you should be able to let them learn independently without much assistance. You may want to keep a numbered set of login instructions nearby, until your child becomes comfortable with the process.</li></ol>

6 Tips for Introducing Kids to Laptops

While student success largely relies on factors like study habits, school attendance, test-taking abilities and more, research is showing that parental involvement also has a large impact on student achievement in the classroom. In fact, according to the Academic Development Institute, parents who get involved with their <a href="http://www.adi.org/journal/ss01/chapters/Chapter16-Hara&amp;Burke.pdf">child's education</a> tend to&nbsp;demonstrate good parenting skills, volunteer their time in the school, communicate with faculty and take an active role in school-related decision-making.The Harvard Family Research Project concluded that parental involvement is associated with <a href="http://www.hfrp.org/publications-resources/browse-our-publications/parental-involvement-and-student-achievement-a-meta-analysis">higher student achievement</a>. They found that student success was higher in a variety of areas including standardized test scores, grades and teacher ratings. Students are also more likely to enroll in higher-level programs, pass their classes, attend school regularly, have better social skills and move onto post-secondary education. The types of parental involvement that had the greatest impact on student success were reading and communicating with one's child, as well as holding parental expectations.How to get parents involved in educationCommunicate regularly It's important to keep a clear line of communication with parents regarding their child's progress. If parents don't know how their child is doing, they may be less likely to get involved. According to IowaParents.org, teachers who regularly communicate with parents generally see a positive effect on <a href="http://www.iowaparents.org/files/involvingparentmshstch.pdf">students' test scores</a>. Send home weekly newsletters with the students that share&nbsp;information regarding classroom success, what the students are working on and&nbsp;contact information&nbsp;for teachers and the school.Provide volunteer opportunities This could range from offering parents the opportunity to come visit their child's school to finding ways to get them to help out, whether&nbsp;in the classroom or on a school field trip.Interactive homework assignments Create homework assignments that are going to bring parent and child together. This could involve a worksheet asking parents to describe their child's work&nbsp;or to share their&nbsp;understanding of educational&nbsp;concepts. According to the Center for Public Education, teachers who involve parents in school work saw a <a href="http://www.centerforpubliceducation.org/Main-Menu/Public-education/Parent-Involvement/Parent-Involvement.html">boost in student scores</a> in both writing and science.Teachers and parents alike are seeing success with blended learning approaches that can be incorporated both in and out of the classroom. Encourage parents to create a home environment that&nbsp;promotes learning and reinforces what is being taught at school. This may help students to foster the life skills they need to carry with them outside of the classroom.

Helping Children be Successful in Math

Updated March 18, 2020Every student’s DreamBox Learning journey begins by logging in to their unique DreamBox account. How a student logs in — whether through a school’s DreamBox address or a single sign-on portal — depends on their school’s preference. Teachers will share a school’s login method with students at the start of each school year.(Note: the below instructions are for students accessing a DreamBox school account. For students logging in with a DreamBox Parent/Home subscription, please follow the instructions for&nbsp;<a href="https://support.dreambox.com/s/article/How-to-Log-In-to-your-DreamBox-Family-Dashboard">logging in to the Family Dashboard</a>).Below, we’ve outlined the four different DreamBox login methods available to students:

<h3>1) Unique DreamBox Web Address</h3>When a school is&nbsp;created in DreamBox, by default, it’s assigned a unique DreamBox website address. Schools have the option to log in using this address or through a single sign-on portal.Schools that opt to use their designated DreamBox address will instruct their students to log in using either a text-based username and password combination or a picture password plus 5-digit classroom code (depending upon the students’ grade level).Note that student login instructions differ by device type. <h3>2) Clever Single Sign-On</h3><a href="https://clever.com/schools">Clever</a> is a third-party, single sign-on portal used by many school districts. Clever enables students to log in to DreamBox, and other school applications, with just a single username and password.Students can log in to DreamBox using either their unique Clever portal address or through another existing SSO portal (such as a district portal or other learning management system). <a href="https://support.dreambox.com/s/article/Clever-Instant-Login">Learn more about Clever SSO</a>Note that a teacher or an administrator can log in using the same DreamBox school address or portal address as their students but with their unique username and password. For teachers or administrators using a school specific DreamBox address, their username is their district email address.

<h3>3) DreamBox Single Sign-On</h3>&nbsp;With DreamBox Single Sign-On (SSO) students can easily access DreamBox after they log in to their district portal, without having to log in a second time. DreamBox SSO can only be used in conjunction with&nbsp;the DreamBox Automated Roster Management (ARM) tool.&nbsp;<a href="https://support.dreambox.com/s/article/DreamBox-Single-Sign-On">Learn more about DreamBox SSO</a>&nbsp;Note that student login instructions for DreamBox SSO differ by device type. <h3>4) ClassLink Single Sign-On</h3><a href="https://www.classlink.com/k-12/overview">ClassLink</a>&nbsp;is a third party single sign-on portal that is used by many school districts. Students can log in via ClassLink and easily access DreamBox and all other district learning applications at the same time.
