9 Fun Math Facts for Earth Day 2016

April 22, 2016

New discoveries about Earth happen every day. Chemists and biologists use math and science to give us valuable information we wouldn’t otherwise have access to. Here are 9 mighty math-y facts about our fair planet.

Did you know…

1. Earth has a mass of 6 sextillion tons, but no weight at all! (It’s free-floating in space.)

2. The three largest countries on Earth in regard to population are China, India, and the United States. The total number of people in these three countries combined is 2,940,000,000 (almost 3 billion!).

3. The total area of the world’s land is 148.94 million km2 and the total area of the world that is covered in water is 361.132 million km2.

4. The total population of Earth is 7,256,490,000 people. Each year there are 18.6 births and 7.8 deaths per 1,000 people.

5. The two largest countries by land area on Earth are Russia and Canada. Russia measures 17,075,200 km2 of land, while Canada has 9,984,670 km2 of land.

6. The Earth’s population was 1 billion in 1804 and 7 billion in 2011. The population increased by an average of 28,985,507 people per year over that 207-year period.

7. The European Space Agency estimates that there are more than 600,000 trash objects larger than one centimeter in diameter floating in space. A golf ball is still floating somewhere in space after it was hit from the international space station by Michail Tjurin, a Russian astronaut, as part of an advertisement for a Canadian sports company in 2006.

8. The sun is 92.95 million miles from Earth.

9. The moon’s radius is 1,079 miles, about one-fourth that of the Earth’s.
